BABCP to reach out in Edinburgh

An open meeting for members of the public and health professionals is being organised by the BABCP to launch

this year’s annual conference in Edinburgh. The meeting ‘What is CBT?’ is aimed at introducing the therapy and exploring how it is being developed in England and Scotland.

Dr Chris Williams, Director of the Glasgow Institute for Psychosocial Interventions (GIPSI) and author of Living Life To The Full (www.livinglifetothefull.com) will explain how CBT works.

The Scottish Government’s head of mental health service delivery, Alex McMahon will be one of the keynote speakers and will talk about the development of psychological therapies north of the border.

Professor David Clark, from the Institute of Psychiatry, will talk about Improving Access to Psychological Therapies in

England.

The meeting, which takes place on the eve of the conference at 3pm on Wednesday July 16th, is aimed at

breaking down some of the mystique surrounding CBT and involving users, lay people and health professionals and

commissioners who are interested in the development of CBT.

President-elect John Taylor said: “We are trying to reach out to new audiences who may have heard something about CBT, but do not really know what it is and how it works. “We hope to attract members of the general public and potential commissioners of services from Scotland

and England.”

The meeting is being held in Appleton Towers at the University of Edinburgh.

Admission is by ticket only

Accreditation standards to be

strictly maintained - BABCP

STANDARDS of Accreditation for therapists are to be strictly maintained as CBT become more readily available on the NHS, the BABCP has told its members.

Organisations which provide new ‘High Intensity’ CBT courses will have to meet the same standards as set for other CBT courses, previously.

Any organisation which tries to give the impression that it is offering trained and accredited CBT therapists, without having satisfied the BABCP’s accreditation criteria, will be identified.

The BABCP is responsible for the Accreditation of all ‘High Intensity’ courses which are being set up under the Government’s £170million Improving Access to Psychological Therapy programme.

Officials from the charity have been working with the IAPT programme to ensure that Accreditation standards are maintained and strictly observed for the courses.

Rod Holland, Chair of the BABCP Workforce Group, said: “We are determined that there will be no reduction in standards for ‘High Intensity’ courses.

“Patients must have confidence that they are being seen by therapists who satisfy the criteria and who can provide the highest CBT skills.

“Courses will have to meet BABCP’s accreditation criteria if their trainees are to be recognised as accredited therapists at the end.
