Accreditation standards 'to be maintained'

STANDARDS of Accreditation for therapists are to be strictly maintained as CBT becomes more readily available on the NHS, the BABCP has told its members.

Organisations which provide new 'High Intensity' CBT courses will have to meet the same standards as previously set for other CBT courses.

Any organisation which tries to give the impression that it is offering trained and accredited CBT therapists, without having satisfied the BABCP's accreditation criteria, will be identified.

The BABCP is responsible for the Accreditation of all ‘High Intensity' courses which are being set up under the Government's £170million Improving Access to Psychological Therapy programme.

Officials from the charity have been working with the IAPT programme to ensure that Accreditation standards are maintained and strictly observed for the courses.

Rod Holland, Chair of the BABCP Workforce Group, said: "We are determined that there will be no reduction in standards for ‘High Intensity' courses.

"Patients must have confidence that they are being seen by therapists who satisfy the criteria and who can provide the highest CBT skills.

"Courses will have to meet BABCP's accreditation criteria if their trainees are to be recognised as accredited therapists at the end.
