The past few days have been difficult for people across the UK. We have seen racist violence, that we know will be upsetting and scary for our members, colleagues and the wider public. The targeting of people seeking asylum in the UK, of ethnic minority communities more generally, and the Muslim community in particular are deplorable actions.
People seeking asylum are some of the most vulnerable members of our communities. They face a life of uncertainty and financial hardship, which may drag on for years. These factors alongside the persecution, violence and abuse they may have faced in the countries they have fled, can clearly have a massive negative impact on mental health.
Likewise, many British Muslim individuals and communities have endured a significant Islamophobia, leading to some of the poorest mental health in the country. The violent scenes across the UK where Muslims are being targeted will be causing additional distress.
We encourage services to offer support to those affected by the violence or the threat of violence. This includes members of their local communities, police officers and other emergency services.
With the level of misinformation we are seeing, we encourage BABCP members to make time to get to know their local communities and be wary of information shared via social media. We encourage members to take positive action within communities and would like to know if there are other ways that we can support you better at this difficult time.
