We are seeking a Clinical Lead to contribute to the leadership and development of a section of the counselling and psychological services within Student Wellbeing & Inclusion.

Job Purpose

The University of Glasgow is committed to the wellbeing and success of its students and to providing effective and flexible support services which aid successful study. As a key member of the Student Wellbeing and Inclusion Team, the Clinical Lead will co-lead a multi-disciplinary team of counselling and psychology professionals providing mental health and wellbeing support to our community of circa 32k students.

The Clinical Lead is responsible for:

  • Inducting, coaching and supervising clinical members of staff within the service so that they operate in accordance with the prescribed professional standards
  • Being a point of clinical escalation, making appropriate judgements and decisions to ensure that appropriate plans and support mechanisms are in place to address complexity and risk
  • Providing expert advice and guidance to the Head of Student Wellbeing and Inclusion and other senior stakeholders in connection with matters of mental health and wellbeing
  • Contributing to the training and development of colleagues involved in the support and wellbeing of students Working with the Head of Student Wellbeing and Inclusion, and in partnership with students, staff and external agencies, the Clinical Lead plays a critical role in promoting good mental health amongst students.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide clinical leadership and day to day management for a team of counselling and wellbeing staff, ensuring that the staff receives appropriate support, development and supervision.
  2. Develop and promote creative and innovative therapeutic approaches, which reflect the needs of the University's student community.
  3. Take responsibility for clinical decisions and convene case conferences where necessary in order to agree strategies for supporting students who are considered to be a risk to themselves and/or to others.
  4. Work collaboratively with colleagues in the service and with the student bodies, academic and professional services colleagues, colleges and schools, to devise, deliver and support campaigns which improve mental health and wellbeing.
  5. Provide expert guidance and training on student mental health to members of the University community and, in particular, engage with colleges and schools to ensure that frontline staff are equipped to support students and have access to advice and guidance when it is required.
  6. Work with the Head of Service to implement strategies for the collection and analysis of relevant data to evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of service provision, identify needs and inform service improvement and investment decisions.
  7. Maintain a caseload and provide initial consultations/assessments
  8. Advise and lead on the management of cases involving complex and high-risk students.
  9. Build good working relationships with the key external agencies (Barclay Medical Practice and specialist NHS services, etc), to facilitate fast and effective referrals and the exchange of good practice.
  10. Contribute to the development of strategy and process, supporting the Head of Wellbeing & Inclusion to implement service changes and new ways of working which best meet the needs of the student body.
