About the event

The BABCP London Branch are delighted to announce that Professor Marcantonio Spada will be presenting this virtual event. This is a participative workshop being held on Zoom.  Once you have registered you will be sent instructions on joining the Zoom meeting.

Cyberchondria is the unfounded escalation of concerns about common symptoms based on the perseverative review of search results and literature online. We can all fall prey to cyberchondriac behaviour especially in the midst of a pandemic.

An increasing number of CBT practitioners are working with clients presenting with Cyberchondriac features. This virtual event will present a novel model for conceptualising cyberchondria, a variant of health anxiety, and introduce basic treatment techniques to help clients tackle this behaviour, including (1) postponement of engagement in cyberchondriac behaviour; (2) detached mindfulness and attention training; and (3) restructuring of metacognitive beliefs. Tips on building health awareness protocols will also be discussed.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

In this workshop Professor Spada will: (1) outline how to identify cyberchondriac behaviour (including tell-tale signs); (2) review the detrimental impact of this behaviour on physical and mental functioning; and (3) present basic treatment techniques to help clients overcome this behaviour.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

1. To understand the nature of Cyberchondria and be able to differentiate this behaviour from health anxiety and OCD.

2. To conceptualise Cyberchondria using a Metacognitive Therapy framework.

3. To understand the application of basic treatment techniques aimed at interrupting Cyberchondria.
