Chronic insomnia is a common and debilitating problem that affects around one in ten adults and is often associated with other mental health difficulties. Whilst clinical guidelines recommend the use of a cognitive-behavioural approach for the first-line treatment of chronic insomnia, relatively few clinicians and therapists are trained in its delivery. This one-day event will offer intermediate Cognitive Behavioural Therapists training in how to assess, recognise and treat insomnia in adults, using this well-established and evidence-based approach.
Although a cognitive-behavioural approach similar in orientation to other CBT approaches for common mental health problems, CBT for insomnia (CBT-I) is a multi-component and insomnia-specific treatment approach that draws on a range of evidence-based interventions that target the multi-dimensional nature of insomnia. These include Stimulus Control Therapy and Sleep Restriction Therapy, both behavioural treatments, Cognitive Therapy and third-wave approaches, as well as psychophysiological therapeutics and sleep education components.
CBT for insomnia is currently recommended in the NICE guidelines for the treatment of chronic insomnia and the session will include reflections from patients on their own experience of insomnia and how it has affected them.
This event is for intermediate-level psychotherapists who already have training in CBT.Learning outcomes:
- To understand the way in which sleep and wake are regulated, the nature of normative sleep architecture and how sleep changes across the lifespan
- To have knowledge of the range of sleep disorders seen in clinical practice and to be able to screen for them
- To be familiar with the essential skills, techniques and knowledge that constitute the practice of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I)
- To be familiar with the evidence base and NICE guidance relating to the treatment of insomnia disorder
- To have reflected on a clinical case for whom CBT-I is an appropriate intervention
- To be able to assess, formulate and treat a typical case of insomnia disorder, with supervision
