Synopsis
Over two million people suffer, or are at risk of suffering, gambling-related harms in the UK (Public Health England, 2021). Gambling-related harms include a higher risk of suicide, mental health difficulties, financial loss, debts, and harm caused to significant others. As the need for a public health approach to gambling harms is increasingly recognised (Goyder, Blank, Baxter, & van Schalkwyk, 2020), the NHS now funds treatment for those experiencing such harms. 15 specialist NHS services are now available across England.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is the treatment with the largest evidence base for gambling harms and the frontline treatment in the NHS.  This workshop offers an overview of the CBT model employed at the National Gambling Clinic and recently published in a self-help book (Bowden-Jones & Leonidaki, 2022).  CBT practitioners who are interested in gaining skills in managing gambling-related harms may especially benefit from this workshop.

The increased recognition of gambling-related harms has attracted attention to the evolving field of behavioural addiction. There is currently the potential for the development of new evidence-based treatments for other behavioural addictions. The ideas and techniques found in CBT for gambling could well inform such developments. Thus, participants may find the treatment principles presented here relevant to dealing with other behavioural addictions too.

The training material covers relevant issues, including the well-recognised gender bias in the field of gambling, and barriers to treatment for ethnic minority backgrounds. A case study touches how cultural context has influenced their gambling behaviour.

This webinar is designed for qualified CBT practitioners, but its content may also be relevant to other psychological professionals. Additionally, wellbeing practitioners and psychology graduates may also find the webinar helpful. Please note that a basic understanding of the CBT model and basic CBT competencies is necessary for participants to fully benefit from the training.
