This two-hour online workshop will demonstrate how the concept of Values (as developed within Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) can guide the CBT practitioner in their work, supporting people adjusting to Long Term Physical Health Conditions.
After a very brief overview of ACT, the session will explore in more depth the concept of 'Values' as a way of understanding the pain of adjustment, in realistic and tailored goal setting and as a motivational enhancer. Incorporating Values into formulation and intervention can enhance CBT interventions in LTCs without requiring the practitioner to neglect other core CBT skills.
A detailed case example will be used to illustrate all phases of this work, and participants will bring their own case material to apply these concepts and skills in collaboration with other participants. The workshop will have conceptual, skills-development and experiential components.
The latter aspect will likely bring participants into contact with difficult thoughts and feelings about their own life and health: depending on your personal circumstances, please be aware of this when choosing to attend.
This workshop aims to improve CBT clinical practice. This will be achieved by ensuring that participants have a clear understanding of the underlying principles of this approach. The session will present examples and demonstrate skills, as well as incorporate small group activities in formulation and treatment planning. Additionally, there will be opportunities for reflection and feedback.
The workshop is suitable for anyone using CBT-based approaches to Long Term Conditions. No previous knowledge of ACT is required.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- describe the concept of Values and their role in adjustment to Long Term Conditions
- have validating and productive conversations with clients about what matters to them
- use Values work to help clients with both the grieving and the reconstruction aspects of adjustment.
