Synopsis

Process-based therapy (PBT) is rooted in CBT and ACT theory and practice. This workshop will provide an overview of PBT, including the background, current evidence, progress, and a specific focus on physical health.

In the past, when randomised clinical trials of psychological therapy were designed, and when the term “Empirically Supported Therapy” was used, this “therapy” was invariably prespecified as a set of methods in a set order. This had certain advantages. A disadvantage is that the knowledge gained and summarised this way was not able to tell us exactly what underlying processes to address, for which primary problems, for whom, when, and how to produce the change needed. In essence, we were left with a gap between the available evidence and the needs of particular people. Put more simply still, aggregated group data from studies of static treatment protocols had let us down.

As this has dawned on us in the wider arena of clinical psychology, we are beginning to make changes. These changes include a greater focus on mechanisms of change, on research designs that employ intensive longitudinal data from individual people, and on statistical analyses that can process this data and determine individual patterns of relations between mechanism and outcome. These represent the initial starting point for developing what is called Process-Based Therapy (PBT). Even though this term has been discussed for at least seven years or so, building the knowledge base, developing the technology, disseminating the results, and implementing PBT takes time.

The workshop will cover examples of assessment, data analysis, and relevant treatment methods, making it suitable for anyone using CBT-based approaches for long-term conditions, including Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs).

The aim of this workshop is to enhance CBT clinical practice by:

1. Ensuring participant understanding of the underlying principles of this approach

2. Presenting examples and demonstrating skills

3. Incorporating small group activity in formulation and treatment planning

4. Offering opportunities to reflect and feedback
