This workshop is designed to enhance your therapeutic practice when supporting cancer patients. The session will introduce the evidence base as well as provide an opportunity to practice and discuss core skills in working with this patient population within a CBT framework. The session will also look at ways to improve patient outcomes at a service level.
CBT interventions are NICE-recommended for long-term conditions in a physical health setting (e.g. cancer, persistent pain). 25% of cancer patients will need specialist psychological support for mental ill health. CBT for long-term physical health conditions has a strong evidence base. Research has shown CBT to be effective in reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, distress, and fear of recurrence. Systematic reviews have shown CBT is particularly effective for psychological adjustment to living with and beyond cancer. As such, it is recommended in NICE guidelines. However, less evidence is available on the refinement of delivery methods (e.g. digital delivery).
This workshop is suitable for first-year post-qualified CBT Therapists.
Learning outcomes:
1) To enhance understanding of the psychological impact of cancer and its treatment
2) To develop skills in applying CBT techniques to address common challenges to psychological wellbeing in cancer patients
3) To explore different applications of CBT for different presentations in cancer care from diagnosis, survivorship and palliative care
4) To improve confidence in working with distress, fear or recurrence, and existential concerns in cancer patients
5) To provide opportunity for live deliberate practice of at least one core skill in working with cancer patients
