Synopsis
This one-day event will provide a practical introduction to delivering psychological therapies to diverse communities. The event is aimed at staff working in mental health services, and will provide an introduction to the broad ideas that underpin adapting therapies, largely developed for majority white populations, to increase their effectiveness and accessibility for minoritised communities. The workshop is based on the key principles of the IAPT Positive Practice Guide for working with minoritised communities.
The workshop will begin with the first principles of why adaptation of therapies is important, before using case examples to guide participants through key skills needed for such adaptations. The session will also cover the consideration of the way culture shapes people’s understanding of mental health difficulties and informs the way they seek help, as well as the role of spirituality and faith in mental health treatment.
The session will also outline the impact that experiences of racism and other forms of discrimination can have on mental health, and provide therapists with the skills to respond to this effectively. It will also include an overview of the importance of maintaining cultural humility in the way that we offer and think about treatments.
