LGBTQ+ Special Interest Group

The creation of the LGBTQ+ SIG allows a focus to consider the experiences, discrimination and assumptions members of the LGBTQ+ community, whether they be patients or clinicians, may face. Society is very much cisnormative and heteronormative, with many often struggling to see outside of binaries. This SIG will allow members to consider and develop their therapeutic skills ensuring that those from the LGBTQ+ community have access to non-judgmental, affirmative therapy.

Aims

  • To provide and develop high quality training from academics, clinicians, professionals and those with lived experiences to BABCP members regarding the specific complexities and challenges faced by those from the LGBTQ+ community accessing therapy
  • To increase accessibility and engagement within therapy for and with the LGBTQ+ community
  • To provide relevant and regular information to it's members regarding changes in LGBTQ+ policy including policies issued by the government and psychotherapy professional bodies, and in new research
  • To give a voice to members about changes as discussed above
  • To recognise the importance of lived experience and of those who are experts by experience.
  • To collaborate with other SIGs to ensure that Intersectionality is on the agenda for future training events.
